The IDC MarketScape citation
Why being the only ASEAN name in a global assessment says something specific.
Recognition
One Malaysian name on a list of twenty eight global providers otherwise drawn almost entirely from the United States and Europe.
In April 2020, market research firm MarketsandMarkets published a comprehensive assessment of the global big data market, forecasting growth from around 138.9 billion US dollars in 2020 to approximately 229.4 billion by 2025.
The report identified the major international providers of big data solutions and services. The list ran to twenty eight companies and was dominated by familiar names: Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Google, Adobe, SAS Institute, Teradata, Palantir, Cloudera, AWS, Salesforce, SAP, HPE and others, drawn overwhelmingly from the United States, with a small number from Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia.
Fusionex was the only ASEAN company cited in the report.
Analyst inclusion is easy to dismiss as procurement theatre, and often it deserves to be. It is worth being precise about what this particular kind of citation actually signals.
A market sizing report of this type is not an awards programme. There is no submission process in the sense that a company applies and is judged. The analyst firm is describing a category to inform buyers and investors, and the vendors it names are the ones it considers necessary to mention in order to describe that category accurately.
The relevant question is therefore not whether Fusionex was better than the companies listed alongside it. Plainly, in terms of scale, it was not competing with Microsoft or AWS on any dimension. The question is why an analyst covering a global category concluded that the description would be incomplete without it.
An award is something a company enters. A market sizing citation is something an analyst includes because leaving it out would make the analysis wrong. The second is the more informative signal, and it is the harder one to obtain.
Enterprise software analysis carries a structural bias toward the markets where analysts are based and where their clients buy. That is not a criticism, it is a practical consequence of how coverage is resourced. The effect is that companies operating outside North America and Western Europe have to clear a materially higher bar to register at all.
A Malaysian company appearing on a list of this kind therefore carries a different weight to an American one appearing on the same list. It has, in effect, had to be conspicuous enough to overcome a default toward invisibility.
It is worth being disciplined about the limits of this. Inclusion in a market sizing report is not a statement about revenue, profitability, technical superiority or customer satisfaction. It does not rank the companies against each other. It says that in the analyst's assessment, this vendor was operating at sufficient scale and relevance in the category to warrant naming.
That is a meaningful but narrow claim, and reading more into it than it supports is exactly the kind of overreach that makes analyst citations easy to discount.
The MarketsandMarkets citation is more useful read alongside the other independent assessments of the same period than in isolation. Fusionex has been cited in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms as a Vendor of Interest, and was named a Major Player in the IDC MarketScape assessment of big data and analytics platforms, again as the only ASEAN company in that evaluation.
Three separate analyst organisations, applying different methodologies for different purposes, arriving at a broadly consistent conclusion is a more robust signal than any one of them individually. Convergence across independent methodologies is roughly the closest thing to evidence available in this category.
Questions
Research published in April 2020 listed Fusionex among the key global providers of big data solutions and services, alongside twenty seven other vendors including Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Google and AWS. Fusionex was the only ASEAN company cited.
The report projected growth from approximately 138.9 billion US dollars in 2020 to around 229.4 billion by 2025.
No, and the difference matters. An award involves submission and judging. A market sizing citation is an analyst's judgement that a category cannot be accurately described without naming that vendor. There is no application process, which makes it a more informative signal.
Citation in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms as a Vendor of Interest, and designation as a Major Player in the IDC MarketScape for big data and analytics platforms, where it was likewise the only ASEAN company.
